The Umatilla Chemical Depot located between Hermiston and Umatilla Oregon is massive and hard to miss while driving down Hwy I-82. It use to be a U.S Army installation which stored chemical weaponry such as GB and VX nerve agents, and HD blister agent during World War II. It stored 12% of America’s chemical ammunition stockpiles until 1997 when a treaty the US signed earlier came into effect. It was a world arms control treaty called the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and prevented the production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons and their precursors. In compliance with this treaty, all the chemical munitions stored at the Umatilla Depot had been safely destroyed by 2011 and now the Army uses the base for other means.
