Northwest Tattoo Museum, Coeur d’ Alene ID

The Northwest Tattoo Museum is a free educational attraction that focuses on the history and development of tattooing in America. When we arrived we were greeted by the museum owner and curator Jay Brown. Jay is an old school tattoo artist and a very knowledgable man, who could not only answer all our obscure questions about tattoo history but also had a wealth of personal experiences with tattooing legends he was willing to share. He is also a Masters of Tattoo Certificate holder and has 30 years of experience in the tattooing industry. Jay took us on our tour of the museum and explained everything in depth. He was friendly and made it a memorable trip by becoming excited about the history he was teaching. We probably spent close to two hours here.

Exhibits throughout the museum include Business Cards, Documents, Historical Pictures, Posters, Stencils, Tattoo Ink, Tattoo Machines, etc, as well as exhibits showcasing the work of tattoo greats such as Amund Dietzel, Bert Grimm, Bill Jones, Bill Moore, Bob Shaw, Cap Coleman, Cliff Raven, Don Ed Hardy, Don Nolan, E.E. Brown, Ernie Carafa, Fred Marquand, Henry Goldfeild, Huck Spaulding, Jack Rudy, J.F. Barber, Lyle Tuttle, Milton Zeis, Nick Melroy, Owen Jensen, Paul Rogers, Percy Waters, R.J. Rosini, Sailor Jerry Collins, Stan & Walter Moscowitz, and many more.

Jay has been working on diversifying the museum by incorporating indigenous tattooing techniques and history as well. He also offers other services aside from the museum, including identification and appraisal of historic tattoo items, repair & restoration services on vintage tattoo machines, and actual tattoo appointments.

If youโ€™re in Idaho and looking for some reliable information regarding tattoo history, tattoo processes, or anything else regarding tattooing than this is your stop. Jay really knows his stuff, and it’s clear he loves what he does. My curiosity was peaked when I saw how tattoo history twists and blends into other American history aspects. It will be a memorable place if your a tattoo enthusiast or history buff.
